YEAR 1 / 1ST & 2ND SEMESTERS:
The first year of the program is a classroom-based initial training program. Semester 1 focuses on general physics concepts and the mathematical and numerical tools required for further training. Semester 2 includes specialty courses in photonics. The basics of guided optics, nonlinear optics and laser physics are covered in a series of lectures and tutorials. Laser applications are then presented by external speakers in the form of short seminars, and fiber optic communications are treated theoretically in lectures and illustrated experimentally in practical work. A nanofabrication module introduces the planar technologies used in microelectronics (optical lithography, electronics, dry and wet etching, thin-film deposition), as well as cleanroom working conditions. The course concludes with a series of practical exercises at the nanofabrication center of the ICB laboratory’s ARCEN CARNOT platform. Semester 2 ends with a 6-week laboratory research project.
