No matter if you choose to live in the CROUS residencies or find your own housing in town, you will need to subscribe to a housing insurance. As an international student you are required to subscribe to a French insurance policy in France.
You have different possibilities to insure your room in France. The best for you would be to compare prices.
If you plan to open a French bank account, you can compare what the bank offers you (Société Générale, LCL, BNP, Banque Populaire, Crédit Agricole, etc.). The LCL for example charges 66 euros per year.
You also have insurance companies: Matmut, Direct assurance, MMA, Maaf, Allianz, Axa, Groupama, Maif etc. These generally offer a student insurance around 120 euros per year. Some of them, like the Matmut for example offer great prices for shared housing . If you live with other students you can share the insurance price between yourselves putting it around 20 euros each (according to the surface of the apartment and number of rooms, usually under 4).
One offer that previous ICM students have subscribed to is: https://www.assurances-etudiant.com/ starting at 23 euros a year.
Up to you to find the best option according to your needs (living situation, student’s status, gender and age).
Whichever one you choose be careful when you subscribe to the type of contract it is. “Tacit renewal” means that unless you ask your insurance provider per email or official letter to cancel your subscription next year, it will automatically re-subscribe, leaving you to pay another year. The notice period to cancel is usually 3 months before the end of the contract.
